MARCH session: Approaches to user training in core facilities: pre and post pandemic

Date: Thursday 3rd March 222
Time: 4:00 – 5:00 pm (CET)

SUMMARY:

Many Core Labs need to train users on the equipment in their facilities. This gives users more autonomy and a transferable skill. However training can often be haphazard, undocumented and untested. We will look at current training practices in two example facilities and also discuss what CTLS can do to promote best practises in user training.

PRESENTERS:

Derek Davies

Derek Davies is currently the Science Technology Platform Training Lead at the Francis Crick Institute in London. For many years he headed a Flow Cytometry Core Facility at firstly the London Research Institute (part of Cancer Research UK) and then the Francis Crick Institute which formed in 2015. The facility is one of the largest in the world with nearly 30 analysers and sorters and a staff of 12. He is a former ISAC (international Society for the Advancement of Cytometry) Councilor, is the Chair of flowcytometryUK and has for many years been involved in educational activities worldwide.

Rafael Camacho

Rafael Camacho, Scientific Officer at the Centre for Cellular Imaging of Gothenburg University and Project Coordinator for Correlative Array Tomography at Integrated Microscopy Technologies, SciLifeLab, Sweden. The Centre for Cellular Imaging (CCI) offers world-class access, service, and expertise to innovative imaging technologies since 2003. With our experience in advanced microscopy imaging, specimen preparation, data processing and analysis we support the broad needs of our users both in academia and industry. Rafael joined the CCI in 2018, and since then he has been heavily involved in the training of users for light and electron microscopy (theory and practice), as well as in and bioimage analysis. Each year CCI staff scientists provide full training to around 75 new researchers, and provide education to an additional 150 researchers and students at the graduate, postdoctoral and professional level, by organising or participating in different national and International courses, meetings, seminars and workshops.
